PAIR OF CHIRAGDHANS
Medium: Brass Alloy
Dimensions: 19" x 8" each
Weight: 8 kg approx
This pair undoubtedly shows some influence from South Indian figurative oil lamps, being equally at home in a Hindu temple or Muslim shrine. But these chiraghdans have an even closer relationship with Deccani Muslim design – similar baluster shapes and ridged khumbas (pillars) occur in the depictions of gilt metal poles supporting canopies over the thrones in Bijapuri miniature paintings of the seventeenth century. It is quite likely that this pair of lamps illuminated a Deccani Sufi shrine.
